OCTOBER NEWSAn Auto-X can get a whole lot more interesting when you trade in the cones for Pumpkins. Lindsey Racing is now carrying a complete line of Twin Ball Bearing turbos. Not only can you get this turbo in any of the TO4E configurations we sell our standard 360 degree bearing turbo in, you can get it from the company you trust and who stands behind their products. These are a true Garrett twin ball bearing center cartridge formerly not available to any turbo builders. The only twin ball bearing turbo you could get was a configuration (spec wise) from Garrett. Specs that we felt were not suited for the 951 and making good power. Especially a higher boost or larger displacement engine. Plus there were considerable modifications required to make them fit the 951. Going to the trouble and expense to fit one when we felt it wasn't sized right seemed senseless. We chose to wait for the correct solution.
Some of the other ball bearing turbos out there could either be a single or dual bearing but are not the Garret design or components, but rather an aftermarket turbo builder's version. Not the genuine Garrett solution that we have been waiting for to offer our customers. Anything from our Super 48 to our Super 75 is available in this Garrett TBB (twin ball bearing) configuration. We can build you something custom if you like. We will stock them in different trims and hot housings just like we do now with our complete 360 line. There are two requirements. It must be a TO4E which is a 3" inlet and it must be WET configuration. These are available now although the web site is not updated to include them. Until then, telephone in your order. We should have the web pages updated the first week of October. We are finishing up all the final working out of the water and oil connections. They should be done at the time of this issue's release. For now, they will require one of our Turbo Oil Inlet Filter Kits. A special TBB version. We are working on a stock replacement oil feed line, but that will be down the road a little. So make sure you budget that in as well. We have a new option coming for our Billet Fuel Rails. This will allow you to run a stock OEM style fuel regulator or our adjustable billet regulator on the rail versus the remote regulator. For those running in a stock class which dictates that you run a stock regulator, such as the 944 series, you can! Look for it Mid November. In the last issue of Horsepower Talk, we mentioned that in this next issue we would outline the products that Lindsey Racing produces. Well... here you go. This list does not include some smaller specialty items such as band clamps, copper gaskets, special valve train components, tapered heavy duty wrist pins, custom piston rings etc... There are 92 primary items below. Many of those items are offered in several different sizes or specifications such as turbos, hard pipes and cylinder heads. Many of our products are offered in a variety of combinations of size, color and finish. A product such as a hard pipe kit when offered in two versions (swedged and non-swedged), three finishes (plain, polished or black powder coated), and with three different colors of silicone hose (red, blue and black), can add up to many part numbers in itself. We will let you do the math. Engine & Transmission:

Brake Caliper Adapters for '86 951 Suspension:
Lower Control Arms Spring Hat for 2.25" Springs Body:

ENGINE MODS:
Lindsey Racing Built 2.5L SHOP TALKLast issue we talked about the Stage IV clutch installed in Richard Davis's 89 Turbo S. At this time, he has logged over 3,000 miles on the clutch. For those of you interested in how it's still doing, I asked Richard to comment and this is what he has to say:" The SPEC Stage IV solid puck clutch is now has over 3700 miles on it. At 2200 miles I took a road trip to Austin Texas. On the highway there just wasn't much clutching to worry about, especially with all the new torque of the 2.8L upgrade. On the way down traffic was so heavy I was left to just cruise along at 70 to 80 and wait for the rare opportunity to pick up the pace. Interestingly those opportunities were in the big towns like Ft Worth and Waco. Even then, with the extra torque I found myself just putting the hammer down without downshifting. Once in Austin I spent a week cruising around in the traffic of Austin and Round Rock just north of Austin. My navigator was my friend Carl that I was visiting and lived in Round Rock. Besides his navigation skills, he added a good 300 lbs. to the car. Seems like every short cut to avoid traffic was through some kind of parking lot full of speed bumps. To be honest I was more concerned about the speed bumps knocking the exhaust loose than the clutch engagement. After 2500 miles between the clutch breaking in any me learning where and how to use the small amount of engagement available I've almost gotten to where I don't think about the clutch much any more. Carl did however notice the on-off of the clutch enough that he did not want to take a turn behind the wheel because, "I haven't driven a manual in way to long to tackle this monster." It was partly the clutch but mostly the torque and turbo boost of the 2.8 that put the monster in that statement. The highlight of my trip was cruising from Austin over to Frederisckburg and joining the Boxstoberfest run through the Hill Country. What a blast. I highly recommend attending that event whether you have a boxster or not. It amounted to six hours of cruising from 60 to 100 mph through twisty turny roads marked 25 and 35. It was so much fun that Carl made the comment on the cruise back to Austin that he had had enough, leaned the seat back and promptly started snoring. After a quick five hour run back to OKC things got back to normal except it seemed to be more and more difficult to shift and get a smooth launch. On the way over to Mike's house to watch Red Line then go shoot some pool the shifter got really loose and wouldn't go into 2nd, 4th, or reverse. We called Dave and he told us to check the screw on the shift linkage on side of the transmission. He said I could just crawl under the car from the back and reach it just fine, but I must be a lot thicker than Dave as we had to jack the car up to fit my fat self under the transmission. Anyway, I found Dave was 100 percent right. The linkage screw was really loose. I tightened it up and off Mike and I went to continue our Pool rivalry. Then the most amazing thing happened. Tightening that linkage screw made a world of difference not just in shifting, but is seemed to make the clutch a lot smoother. Significantly smoother. I don't know if it was the sloppy shifter effecting how I was engaging the clutch or what. Even my 87 year old mother made the comment that the car rode much smoother. Just last Sunday I did my second autocross with the freedom from break- in limitations and it was a complete total blast. My only trouble was learning some right foot traction control restraint. Upshifts were solid and effortless with just a bit of a chirp and downshifting into the turns I was able to initiate rotation by adding just a bit of power to let the rear break as the clutch engaged with a snap." Although Richard seemed to veer from the clutch specific comments, we think what's interesting is the fact that he did. As if the clutch wasn't so important anymore. Enjoying the car was. I think more and more people will try a set-up like this in the future. Many of our customers are now running Joe Gibbs Racing Oil. As we have previously stated, we won't run anything but Joe Gibbs in our cars or customer cars that we are adding the oil to. The BR and XPs we have been using as you know have all the good stuff promoting lubrication, but they do not contain detergent properties some people like. That is until now! There is a new oil in town. Joe Gibbs Hot Rod Oil! We even like the name. Due to be released October 1st, so by the time you read this, it should be available for shipping.
With known bearing and lifter problems on 944 engines, we feel this in an area that shouldn't be skimped on. Why would you put anything in your engine but the best you can get. It's available in 10W-30 and 15W-50 weights. Both weights are synthetic. Many of the technical calls we take with customers on running issues are plumbing related. These cars are 20 years old. Who knows how many mechanics have had their hands on them over the years. How many times has the intake been pulled for a clutch or head gasket? Did the hoses, vacuum hoses in particular, get re-installed correctly? Or maybe it's a customer installing a HP kit with a new turbo. Everything comes apart on the intake for that. He may re-install the hoses the way they were, but that doesn't mean they were correct in the first place. On the 944 Turbo, it's extremely important that the vacuum and pressure hoses are hooked up correctly. If not, the car may run, but not to it's potential. Or worse, the car could run lean and damage the engine. Something as simple as a small vacuum hose in the wrong spot could cost you 50 RWHP and a lazy feeling car or a hole in a piston. Since this problem seems to be growing as more and more people are heading down the upgrade path, we are working on the ultimate vacuum hose diagrams since we feel this is probably the most troublesome area of the car. It's also one of the most difficult for people to understand or communicate with over the telephone or E-mail. Although the diagrams have been helpful, they still seem to leave a few people scratching their head. We also feel this will allow customers, or their installers, to get these problems corrected more easily without having to spend time communicating with us. They will appear on the vacuum diagrams page in our tech garage section along with the current diagrams.
