NOVEMBER NEWS
- November 1st... a reminder that Winter is on the way in the South West and already under way in some parts of the Country. You probably have your hand in the left over Halloween candy bowl while reading this, bidding a farewell to October. Last weekend at the War Bonnet Region Pow Wow, as show entrants were registering their cars and getting photos taken at 10:00 AM, it was sunny, calm and in the mid 60's. By noon time, there was a tall wall of grey clouds coming our way from the North. By 1:00, the wind was a steady 20 mph with 40 mph gusts and the temperatures had dropped by 20 degrees. And to make matters worse the sun disappeared. Jackets were coming out and car hoods were closed for fear of getting ripped off the hinges by the gusty winds. The freshly graded horse race track, in preparation for the night's racing, that surrounded us was getting picked up by the winds and turned the air brown. It felt a lot like winter compared to just a couple of hours earlier. Winter is that time of year when, if you haven't already, you're thinking about parking your pride and joy and mulling over upgrades and maintenance plans. For those in the North, that can be a slow paced plan with plenty of time. For those of us in the South, that window of opportunity can be extremely short and for some non existent, with events all year round. We are already seeing this happening with an increase in orders, e-mails and phone calls requesting pricing and availability of upgrade and rebuild parts. If you're considering having us build an engine for you, the earlier you contact us the better. The entire automotive supply and service industry will be busy and it's better to get a jump on things. Lindsey Racing is already gearing up by ordering and building those long lead time items in the hopes to allow everybody to get what they want, when they want it. - We have made a change this month with the Horsepower Talk news letter Archive. The Archived newsletters are now located and viewable from the Lindsey Racing Web Site HERE. This is the same location or page where you subscribed to the newsletter in the first place. At this location, the archived letters will always be accessible without referring to the newsletter to find them. You will continue to receive your monthly e-mail with a link to the current newsletter. When the next issue is released, the last issue will then be moved to the archives for non subscribers as well. This allows visitors and non subscribers to view old newsletters. The non subscribers will not be able to view the current issue and take advantage of the current sales and specials. They will also miss the latest news on what we are up to here at Lindsey Racing since they will be reading Shop Talk a month after the subscribers do. Please encourage your Porsche friends to subscribe so they can benefit from receiving the current issue as it comes out. - Lindsey Racing would like to congratulate Luther Lauderdale for his two recent car show wins. You may remember his beautiful red 97 944 Turbo from our September news letter. Luther took 3rd place at Hot Import Nights at Dallas Texas in the European category and recently a first place in the 944 category at the 2006 War Bonnet Region Pow Wow car show.

JAB Racing 951 JAB Racing, basically stands for Jim and Bret Racing - i.e., Jim Lankford and Bret Patton. As great enthusiasts for the 944 turbo, Bret and Jim love their street cars but considered them much too nice to take to the track; so started the search for a dedicated track car. The search included - cars.com, ebay, local adds, rennlist, and auto trader - the last one provided the car you see here today. The car was for sale at $3500 in Boulder, CO. The car needed paint, the engine was tired, but the interior was very nice. The car was purchased for $3200 and a retired gentleman from Corpus Christi TX was sent to Boulder, CO to pick it up and bring it home to TX. Jim Lankford, who is an industrial paint contractor, has a warehouse in Corpus Christi TX, which is where the car would be stripped and built. Bret Patton, in the meantime, was parting a 944 turbo (for a friend) that had been totaled at Road America and this car was in Heber Springs AR. What happened in the end was this: the interior of the newly purchased car was sold on ebay, and paid for the car. All other NON track parts were sold from ebay to Rennlist, thus starting the budget for the dedicated track car. The car in Heber Springs provided many RACE parts at a discounted fee, which was part of Bret's deal in parting, selling, and shipping the parts from that car, recovering funds for the owner, but he got first choice of parts. The car was actually built in 3 months, which was from the arrival in TX to the day of the first start from a complete overhaul for track duty. Jim and Bret gained experience working on 944 turbos with the help of Tom Charlesworth. Both of the street cars owned by Jim and Bret were refreshed or rebuilt in Tom's shop, they both worked at the shop everyday taking things apart, cleaning things, and putting the cars back together right beside Tom and his staff of one. The first track event for the JAB Racing car was in September of 2004 at Texas World Speedway. The car has been flawless up to the point of this writing and just completed a great weekend at Hallett, a very fun track outside of Tulsa, OK. The car makes about 6-8 events a year at different tracks from TX, OK, TN, and AL. With both Jim and Bret driving the car, the car sees action back to back in DE sessions so it's on the track for 8 sessions a day, 16 sessions over a weekend! With the logistics of two owners who share the car being such a great distance, they achieve harmony by each owner keeping the car for a year, then returning it to the other owner for a year - mainly focusing DE events close to the owner who has the car. All expenses for the car are shared equally and all decisions are made together for improvements and maintenance. Both Jim and Bret are good with the engine; Jim tends to take control of the suspension, while Bret focuses on electronics and tuning - looks like it's working out very well! SHOP TALKFor those of you following the progress we are making with the LR/MAX951 Chip development, we took the 89 Turbo S back to the dyno and pulled off some even more impressive numbers. If you recall the September Horsepower Talk issue, at 15.5 psi of boost, we achieved 275 RWHP & 304 Ft. Lbs. of torque. This time we added a Lindsey Racing 4" Exhaust System and a Lindsey Racing Dual Port Wastegate. With these additional goodies, the car made a impressive 305 RWHP & 345 Ft. Lbs. of Torque.
What makes this even more incredible is the fact that it was done at a mere 16 psi of boost. If you study the chart, you can see that it went from 200 to 345 Ft. Lb's of torque in just 600 RPM. That's a steep torque curve! That explains why the car breaks the tires loose in 2nd gear just about as easily as it does in first. When we turned the boost up to 20 psi, interestingly it made 3 less Horse Power, but made another 21 Ft. Lb's of torque.
You will notice the missing graph lines on the dyno chart. This was happening because the car's ignition was breaking up while on the Dynojet and it was losing the signal from the spark plug lead. When it loses the signal, it cannot calculate the torque and the chart momentarily goes blank. If it picks up the signal again, it continues to record. It was later discovered that the crank sensor's connections on both sensors (see picture below) were cooked from heat thus brittle and fractured into pieces causing them to lose the reference signal. This may of had some effect on the HP numbers since we never got a clean run at 20 psi.
After returning from the dyno with a smile on our faces, this nicely working combination of parts was quickly turned into a complete kit which we now call our 300 RWHP Kit, the same kit that is on sale this November. We are currently developing a MAF (Mass Air Flow) system especially for this kit which we anticipate will increase the Horsepower and Torque numbers even higher and broaden the power band. This MAF system will be for this particular combination of parts and not require a piggy back system if things work out a anticipated. Even if we fall short and don't increase the numbers, we feel we can equal them at less boost. For some customer's, that's even a better result. The same power at less boost can be more appealing then more power at higher boost. In particular with the price of gasoline lately. A MAF with no Piggy Back you say? Lindsey Racing has located and is in the testing phases of a new MAF meter that has a repeatable calibration variance of less then 0.6%. This type of consistent calibration in the aftermarket Porsche meters is unheard of until now. Up until this discovery, this has required us and other companies to utilize piggy back systems to fine tune the cars. Russell Berry of MAX chips is developing the chip set for us which will allow us to replace the AFM (Air Flow Meter) with the MAF meter and actually have better performance and more consistency, since Air Flow Meters can vary in their operation from meter to meter. Russell has been busy developing chips for the 944 NA, 944S and 944S2. We are jointly working on the 968 and 89 944 2.7L chips. Some of these are available now. Others will be available during the next couple of months. So far all reports we see coming back in are excellent on the models already released. To stay up on what's available, you can visit our chip page.
FINAL THOUGHTSWe have many things planned for the coming months. We look forward to sharing them with you.Until next month, we wish you many safe and quick laps. - The Lindsey Racing Crew
